We decided to fundraise for Charing Cross A&E because we believe the A&E is a fundamental part of the hospital.
People visit the A&E for various reasons, from having a toothache to being critically injured, from running out of usual medications to having sudden heart attacks. These make the emergency department one of the busiest parts of the hospital – last year, the department saw 350,000 patients – and staff often face extremely challenging situations.
A report from the King’s Fund states in 2018/2019, there were 24.8 million attendances at the A&E – 68,000 each day on average. Compared to 2011/2012, there was a 2.1% (3.3million) increase in A&E attendances each year.

Charing Cross Hospital
A&E
The emergency department is one of the busiest parts of the hospital – last year the department saw 350,000 patients – and staff often face extremely challenging situations.
Clinical specialising in caring for frail, older patients are now based permanently in Charing Cross, enabling the most vulnerable patients to receive an immediate ‘comprehensive geriatric assessment’.
Around a third of patients attending Charing Cross A&E are aged over 65 years.
The multi-disciplinary team will include a consultant geriatrician, nurses, and allied health professionals such as therapists. They will be able to route patients to a range of services to meet their specific needs, helping many to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
They have recently installed some new artwork around the department to brighten it up and improve the well-being of both staff and patients.
